Chicago Rainbow Pride Crosswalks Dedication-1
Chicago Rainbow Pride Crosswalks Dedication
May 30, 2019 – An installation project at 14 Northalsted intersections of rainbow/pride colored crosswalks was unveiled on May 30, 2019 just in time for Pride Month & the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, the historic event that gave birth to the worldwide Pride movement.
Dignitaries, city and state officials, IDOT representatives, contractors, and extensive media coverage were on hand for the occasion.
The Chicago Rainbow Pride Crosswalks project development and installation was funded by Northalsted Business Alliance through donations collected at Chicago Pride Fest and Northalsted Market Days.
Thirteen of the crosswalks display the 6 color pride rainbow while the 14th at Halsted St & Melrose is painted colors of the transgender flag, showing support and unity with the trans community. This crosswalk is adjacent to the large wall mural on the Howard Brown Health building, painted by queer artists Sandra Antongiorgi, Sam Kirk and Andy Bellomo.
