Dragonette

Martina Sorbara, better known as Dragonette, has lived multiple musical lifetimes over the past 15 years. A Juno Award-winning artist and sought-after songwriter, she’s scored chart-topping hits, collaborated with the world’s biggest DJs, and released four albums. Along the way, Dragonette has headlined shows across the globe; supported the likes of Duran Duran, Ke$ha, Major Lazer, and Miike Snow; and played to thousands of fans at Coachella, Electric Daisy Carnival, Glastonbury, and Lollapalooza.

While Dragonette’s evolving sound lands delectably in between pop, new wave, and dance, Sorbara was raised with very different musical influences. “My past is so the opposite of pop music,” the Toronto-based artist recalls. “Until I was 19 or 20, I largely listened to folk and jazz. Between my hippie school and hippie parents, I thought that pop music had no merit. I had no real exposure to it. And so I ignored it because I thought it was music for other people.” After she left high school, all of that changed. “Once I grew up a little and started listening to music outside of my bubble, I realized that all the music I liked was actually pop. It was just decorated differently.”

Sorbara began her musical career as a singer-songwriter before establishing herself as Dragonette. Trading out her acoustic guitar for a synth, she released a self-titled EP in 2005. Those formative recordings (including Dragonette’s cheeky first single “I Get Around”) put Sorbara’s electropop outfit on the map and earned them a supporting slot at a New Order concert—it was their second show, ever.

They released their debut album, Galore, in 2007, which earned them a nomination for New Group of the Year at the Junos. Those early days were a heady and transformative time for Sorbara—both musically and personally. She was still defining herself as a musician; trying to find the balance between her former, singer-songwriter self, and her new role as the frontwoman of an edgy pop band.

“I liked the idea of dressing up and putting on heels when I went on stage because it was the antithesis of how I had been performing until then,” Sorbara recalls. “At the beginning, I jumped really far in that direction, but it wasn’t me. I was just exploring. And then Dragonette sort of settled into itself. I realized that I needed to dance and have fun—I couldn’t do that while trying to balance in high heels. I didn’t need to make a persona. I just needed to be myself.”

Skillfully blending rock’n’roll sensibilities with slickly-crafted hooks, danceable beats, and sultry vocals, 2009’s Fixin to Thrill reflected Sorbara’s newfound confidence. Dragonette scored its first Canadian Top 40 hit with “Pick Up the Phone” and garnered a Juno nod for Best Dance Album. The band repeated that success with 2012’s Bodyparts, which notched another Juno nomination, landed in the Billboard Dance chart’s Top 20, and featured the exuberant, Canadian Top 40 hit “Let it Go.”

Sorbara was also enjoying the thrill of collaborating with others. Early on, she recorded with the legendary electronic duo Basement Jaxx and co-wrote with pop icon Cyndi Lauper. As Dragonette’s profile rose, Sorbara became an in-demand vocalist and songwriter—particularly in the electronic sphere, where she worked with the likes of Kaskade, Don Diablo, and, most famously, Martin Solveig. The French DJ partnered with Sorbara on “Boys & Girls,” “Big in Japan,” and the massively popular 2010 hit, “Hello.” The single topped pop charts across Europe, hit No.1 on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs, earned a Platinum certification in the US, and won the Juno for Dance Recording of the Year.

As the decade turned, Sorbara continued that momentum, writing and recording alongside Mike Mago, Pretty Sister, and Galantis, with whom she released 2015’s “Peanut Butter Jelly”—a Top 10 hit across Europe, the UK, and Australia. More recently, she co-wrote and performed “Toyko Nights” with Digital Farm Animals and Shaun Frank, while in 2021, she lent her vocals to Gianni Kosta’s effervescent “Phantom.”

Sorbara’s songwriting also extends beyond the electronic realm. As a longtime priority writer with Sony/ATV publishing, she regularly works with acts under UMG, Warner Music, and Syco, among others, while her credits include songs for the multi-platinum-selling country artist Keith Urban, British pop star Nicola Roberts, plus Carly Rae Jepsen with The Knocks.

Those collaborative experiences strongly influenced Sorbara’s approach to Dragonette’s fourth album, 2016’s Royal Blues. Striking a more personal and reflective tone than her previous releases, Sorbara crafted tracks like “Body 2 Body” and “Let the Night Fall” with a diverse collection of writers and producers, including the GRAMMY® and Academy Award-winning songwriter Anthony Rossomando (Lady Gaga, Ellie Goulding); Yonatan “xSDTRK” Ayal (Jessie J, Chloe x Halle); Matt Schwartz (YUNGBLUD, Massive Attack); and Lowell (Hailee Steinfeld, Tate McRae).

Since then, Sorbara has entered a new chapter in her life, taking on her most important role yet—that of a mother. These days, life is all about letting go of expectations around Dragonette and, instead, giving in to whatever feels—and sounds—good. “I just want to keep allowing these tectonic shifts to happen, instead of trying to paint the same picture,” she explains.

Fresh off the heels of her acclaimed new album Twennies, Sorbara is looking forward with more wisdom, experience and confidence than ever before. With Twennies, she chose one creative partner for the entire project—the Los Angeles-based producer Dan Farber (Dizzee Rascal, Lizzo). The two artists spent several weeks together holed up Sorbara’s Toronto studio, where they wrote the majority of the record. “I’ve never concentrated on working on an album like that; just living and breathing this one thing,” she shares.

Twennies marks a full-circle moment for Sorbara. “It’s a true hybrid of my original influences as a child and what I’ve learned along the way. It feels so representative of my musical journey.” She adds, “It’s my favorite thing I’ve ever done. I’m so proud of it.”

Sofi Vonn

Market Days 2023 Performer SOFI VONN 01

American-born, London-based electronic pop singer Sofi Vonn’s deep lyrics and light melodies create a set of contradictions that somehow fit together perfectly to tell a relatable narrative of youth. With her exceptional voice, she deftly expresses emotions and opinions on society, love, sexuality, and all the other things that everyone goes through.

Vonn knows about these things from personal experience, which has taken her across the world and back several times. Born and raised in New York City to German parents, she grew up in the picturesque, artistic West Village neighborhood. She discovered she loved singing after joining the choirs at both her school and at church.

Growing up, Vonn’s interest in music was varied enough that even now, she can subconsciously tap into all of these influences. This has given her the freedom to come up with an artistic style that is uniquely her own.

While she was in high school, Vonn and her family moved to Zürich, Switzerland. Her love of singing continued there, though she felt confused as she considered what to do post-graduation. “I liked music but I didn’t know how to get into it, because when I was applying to college for anything musical, they wanted me to be a Steinway Fellow already, basically,” she says.

Stymied, Vonn put her music dreams on hold, returning to the United States to attend Tulane University in New Orleans. She ended up earning a degree in psychology (with a German minor), but as fate would have it, she was brought back to music when she studied abroad in Berlin, Germany for a year.

“I loved Berlin, so I moved back there after I graduated from college – and that’s how I got into techno and DJing,” Vonn says. “The techno scene there is huge.” Besides DJing at a festival, she also studied sound engineering for a bit before finally landing a full-time job with the BMG record label.

BMG brought Vonn back to her hometown of New York City. Her work at the label taught her marketing skills that she then used to help her advance her DJ career at night. She became an in-demand house and techno DJ, booking numerous shows around the city for the next two years.

As she DJed, Vonn would often sing along to the music. Hearing her, a fellow DJ was impressed by her talent and hired her to sing on a track. It was the catalyst Vonn needed to make her return to the idea of seriously pursuing a singing career.

At the same time, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, giving Vonn even more incentive to think about what she really wanted to do – and in the end, she quit her record label job. “I had a great time working at BMG, but it just was time to go,” she says. “When corona happened, I realized that pursuing my own music career is what will truly make me happy.”

With all the knowledge she’d gained as a performer and at the record label, Vonn realized that she finally had both the skill and the experience that music schools wanted. She was accepted into several Masters degree programs, and chose to study popular music at the highly prestigious Goldsmiths, University of London.

Last September, Vonn made yet another trans-Atlantic move so she could begin her graduate studies. Her time there has already paid off: as a school project, she wrote the emotive song “Is It a Crime,” which she says “is about wanting a meaningful relationship and feeling embarrassed about it, but also being like, ‘Is it a crime?’” That song is set for release later this year.

Unlike many pop singers, Vonn writes all of her own material. A vibrant storyteller, her depth of feeling and love for her craft is evident in every track. Her warm and powerful voice is the perfect means for conveying her lyrics, which are at once introspective yet universal.

Concurrent with her formal music education, Vonn continues to learn about the business aspect of things whenever she can. She found an especially powerful ally when she met renowned music executive Charlie Walk (who helped launch the careers of Lorde, Ariana Grande, and The Weeknd, among many others). Impressed with Vonn’s voice and writing, Walk immediately offered to mentor her, bringing her into his prestigious Music Mastery program earlier this year.

Now that Vonn finally has the necessary experience and support, everything seems to be falling into place with her singing career. She recently recorded a number of songs in Los Angeles, which she plans to release as singles during the coming months. She’s also performed two well-received shows at the prestigious New York City clubs Arlene’s Grocery and Pete’s Candy Store, and she plans to do more shows now that she’s back in London to continue school.

SPOTIFY
INSTAGRAM
FACEBOOK
TWITTER

Vonn is also keeping her DJ career going – but now, she is able to put techno remixes of her own songs into her playlists, such as the remix of her song “Stranger” that’s coming out on August 12. “That’s the beauty of what I’m doing now – it’s the best of both worlds,” she says of this multifaceted approach. “I’m making pop songs, having shows, having other people remix my pop songs. I already know how to DJ so I’ll play the songs. It’s so convenient!”

Vonn recently graduated from Goldsmiths. But beyond that, she is prepared to continue letting life lead her where it will. After all, that attitude seems to have worked out well for her so far. “I didn’t plan for what’s happening right now – but I know that everything I’ve done was necessary to get here now,” she says.

Wherever Vonn ends up, she’ll undoubtedly find more opportunities to create music that is authentic, honest, and real. Even though her colorful life has led her on a more wide-ranging path than what most people will follow, she is still able to make music that will resonate with listeners anywhere.

Betty Who

Betty Who

To understand where Betty Who currently stands in her career, it’s best to imagine her as she often stood as a kid: solo, in front of the bedroom mirror, belting out hits, dancing like everyone’s watching. Because as the Australian pop queen walked away from her record deal and in to her first independent album, she had a single mandate: “I am going to be the most me I can be.” That is, in part, why her third full-length statement is simply called Betty. It’s pure her: a brilliant swirl of pop—’80s, Y2K, and hyper-modern strains—that encompasses everything from intimate artful fare to darkly sexy bangers to full-on wedding reception shout-alongs. What’s more, these are songs about grown-woman emotions delivered by someone who rediscovered the drive and verve that fueled her rise through music in the first place. As Betty says, “It all came back to joy.”

Betty-Who-Market-Days-2023_BW-CK-DCS-scaled

There’s a reason Betty was tapped to remake the Queer Eye theme song for the uplifting series’ second season. It’s the same reason she’s soundtracked Pitch Perfect and made the Glee cast swoon, and that a certain legendary flash mob proposal video went viral to the tune of her 2012 debut single “Somebody Loves You.” Joy has always been in the music, but for Betty, her twelfth feeling had faded. “I didn’t understand how damaging it was to feel like I was never living up to expectation,” she says of her time on a major label. “When you’re in the middle of it, you think it’s driving you. When I came out the other side, I realized, no, I was devastated.” She wanted to handpick her team, sink or swim by her own choices, and share music while it’s fresh. With Betty, she did all of that and made an album that, as she puts it, “I’m more proud of than I could possibly say.”

The world got a taste of that with Betty’s first independent single “Ignore Me,” an uplifting ode to moving on set to warm, indie-tinged electropop. Likewise, synth-streaked dance cut “I Remember” takes on something sad—the dissonance that can bubble up in a relationship—and finds the sweetness there as Betty coos, “I don’t want perfect, I want you.” Our heroine not only split from her label in 2017, she got engaged, and the thrill of realizing you could spend your life with someone rings out on “Marry Me.” The song’s exuberance was inspired by the unabashed pop (namely Katy Perry) Betty loved as a teen. Meanwhile, the vintage JT-evoking “All This Woman” addresses a would-be lover but is really about Betty’s acceptance of her own body: “This is me saying to the man or woman I’m standing opposite, ‘This is what I want and you’re crazy if you don’t want it too.’”

These songs spilled out with a similar assuredness—among them, early teaser “Taste,” which Betty has described as “a little rock ‘n’ roll with just a touch of vampire fetish,” and Betty’s first official single, the achingly up-close, acoustic-powered “Between You & Me.” The process began in sessions between runs of her famously vibrant, intensely choreographed tour. She’d planned to write more when she came off the road, but instead realized she already had an album’s worth of songs she adored. So rather than iron them out in high-profile studios around Los Angeles, she absconded to a rental in Palm Springs with her two of her best friends, artist/producer Pretty Sister and decade-long collaborator Peter Thomas. They finished Betty in 10 days between shared meals and streaming sunshine. “It was one of the best times of my life,” recalls Betty. “I swear I’ll never make a record any other way.”

But that setting conjures the beginning of Betty Who, when the woman born Jessica Newham studied cello at Berklee during the week, then took the first train out to Providence so she could spend all weekend inventing her sound at classmate Peter’s family home. And that hustle itself mimics a theme of Betty’s childhood in Sydney: while her classical training began at age 4, she devoted every free second to Britney, Christina, *NSYNC, and MJ. The voices, the moves, the lyrics, the spectacle—she ate it all up, especially that feeling the best pop gives you: “When you hear it,” says Betty, “and go, ‘Oh my God, you literally wrote this about me.’ I’ve wanted to make music like that ever since.” In that spirit, Betty gives us what we need most right now: an excuse to dance in the mirror, license to trust our instinct, and knowledge that joy is never too far away.

Championed by Billboard as a “fiery country star-in-the-making,” Eden pairs her honest songwriting with punchy tracks from producer Jesse Frasure (Thomas Rhett, Florida Georgia Like, Little Big Town) to deliver her most authentic work yet.  Coupled with a trilogy of music videos that illustrate Brooke’s own path towards loving honestly, Eden confidently shares her romantic optimism and warmth, while sharing the joys of summer all year long.  With over 40 million on-demand streams already, Eden has garnered new critical acclaim with her trilogy of new tracks.  According to Rolling Stone, “with its loping banjo figure and some rhythmic swagger, … ‘No Shade’ is something to make you count the days until spring arrives.” Following with the release of “Sunroof,” Billboard says, “The breezy video, featuring Eden with her real-life girlfriend, feels as liberating, warm and lovely as the song itself.”  The music video for “Sunroof” almost instantaneously shot to the top of iTunes’ all genre chart and was viewed over 6 million times in its first week alone, leading to the video being nominated for the CMT Awards Best Family Feature of 2021.  Gay Times calls Eden the “queer country superstar we need and deserve,” as Eden actively strives to celebrate all forms of love within the Country genre.  The highly anticipated conclusion to her trilogy, “Got No Choice,” premiered on CMT’s Hot 20 in North America and was featured on the Viacom billboard in Times Square, prompting them. to state, “Eden has literally and metaphorically come into full control of her life in the county music scene,” and MTV News to declare, “Her bliss bleeds into every resonant, twangy note she sings.  It’s Infectious.”   For more information, visit Brooke Eden’s website at www.brookeeden.com, or follow her on any social platform, @brookeedenmusic.

Ty Herndon

Ty Herndon

The Grammy-nominated and Dove award-winning recording artist has the ability to connect with an audience far beyond his onstage performance. More than 20 years into his career, Herndon shows no signs of slowing down.

Herndon made his chart debut in 1995 with “What Mattered Most,” which became his first No. 1 song and garnered a Song of the Year award (Music Row Magazine). It was also the title track to his debut album, which debuted on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and had the biggest first-week shipment in the history of Epic Records’ Nashville. Between 1995 and 2002, Herndon charted 17 singles, including his three No.1s and numerous top 10 hits, such as “I Want My Goodbye Back,” “Loved Too Much,” “A Man Holding On,” and “Hands of a Working Man.” He topped the charts in 1996 with the single “Living in a Moment” and again in 1998 with “It Must Be Love.”

In 2014, Ty was the first major male country artist to publicly come out as gay in an exclusive with People magazine. He received an outpouring of support that only strengthened his relationship with fans and the country music community, all while expanding his reach to new and diverse audiences. Shortly after, he made history when he hosted a first-of-its-kind country music event, The Concert for Love and Acceptance. The event, designed to raise awareness and support for LGBTQ youth and families, received national attention from Boston Globe, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Tonight, and many more. Since the launch of the event, Herndon has partnered with GLAAD to produce the event each year and created the Foundation For Love & Acceptance in 2020 to further his work on behalf of LGBTQ acceptance.

Ty found himself back at No. 1 in 2020 — this time on iTunes with his remake of “Orphans of God,” a collaboration with Kristin Chenoweth and Paul Cardall featured on his holiday release, Regifted. He is currently in the studio writing and recording a new album — his first of all new music since 2016’s House On Fire.
