Out of the Closet® in Northalsted, Chicago is a chain of thrift stores whose revenues provide medical care for patients with HIV/AIDS, owned and operated by AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF). When you shop at Out of the Closet thrift stores, you are directly helping people living with HIV.
We are owned and operated by AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), a Los Angeles-based global organization that provides medical, preventative, and educational resources for patients. AHF is the nation’s largest non-profit HIV/AIDS healthcare, research, prevention, and education provider. Out of the Closet thrift stores generate income to help fund the cutting-edge medical services AHF provides for those patients who are unable to pay. 96% of ALL proceeds from Out of the Closet Thrift Stores directly to prevention, treatment and advocacy programs.
The store’s merchandise comes directly from donations, and therefore the store’s revenues are directly reliant upon neighborhood charity. Merchandise sold includes adult clothing, consumer electronics, furniture, bric-a-brac, jewelry, handbags, shoes, and books. Out of the Closet even provides a free pick up service for items that are too large for donors to bring to a store location themselves.
In addition to offering clothing, accessories, furniture and more, several locations also offer health and preventative services. Most locations including free walk-in, rapid HIV testing sites complete with counseling and referrals. Many locations are connected with an AHF Pharmacy, making shopping and prescription pick up convenient.
AHF has expanded their reach to the Lakeview area providing HIV/Prep, Pep/Primary medical care, and Free STI testing/treatment under the attention of our newest Medical Director, James Lagucik, DO.
Dr. Lagucik’s medical background includes training in osteopathic medicine at Midwestern University and carries with him a training in a holistic approach to medicine that focuses on treating the mind, body, and spirit. He strives to help heal patients and optimize their health by first understanding that each person is a unique individual then applying his skills to improve the quality of their life.  The vision and aspiration he has as a Medical Director for AHF is to foster an environment where everyone feels genuinely loved and taken care of; he wants to create a place where patients are excited to partner with our team to achieve their healthcare goals.
AHF Lakeview is now open and providing Medical care, FREE STI testing and treatment and FREE rapid HIV testing 5 days per week, Monday-Friday 10a-6p. Free rapid HIV testing continues throughout the weekend, Saturday 10-7 and Sunday 10-6. To better convenience those we serve AHF also provides a full-scale pharmacy at the same location. Both AHF Pharmacy and Out of the Closet Thrift Store give 96 cents of every dollar earned back into providing services to our patients and communities we serve.
