Thanks to everyone for coming out to the 24th annual Haunted Halsted Halloween Parade. It was great to come together to enjoy the fall weather and celebrate our favorite holiday. Kudos to our hosts, the Dancing Diva, Batty Davis & NBC Chicago Today‘s, Matthew Rodrigues and live music by iPop.

Lakeside Pride marching band, Chicago Spirit Brigade and our honored banner guard Joe & Katie (Chuckie & Bride).
A team of judges selected 3 finalists in each category during the parade, then the audience helped decide the winners. First Place entries each won $500 and Runner Ups were awarded $250. The Large Group category (6+ people) prize was double $1,000/$500. Check out the recap of the first place and runner up winners in the seven costume categories.
The Dark Royals
Husband team Carlos and Ryan Z, Kings of Gayrendelle (also Houston;). A vision of dark royalty from Disney’s Frozen kingdom. They had a Project Runway-style “make it work” moment a few days before Halloween by transforming a long bedazzled cape that was too heavy, into a mini-skirt!

Bill K. and Steve S. from Ohio. “This is our third time coming to Chicago for this event. We’re hooked! In 2014 we were Killer Twinkies and in 2015 Witch & Broom.

Doing this every year for probably 15 years now, I have a fairly decent collection of materials. I like foam and latex for the face.
It’s really an all-year pursuit as I am constantly looking for ideas. If I see a material or an item at a hardware store or a thrift store in February that I think I can make something out of, I will buy it and save it until October.
Something to think about…you can’t drive with giant wings or 10-inch shoes or horns on. I learned to make pieces removable. This year I was able to stick my horns out of the sunroof. In previous years before I had learned this, I had a friend drive me while I lay down in the back of his SUV!

Designer Purses
Bridget and interior designers Chase & Reneh spent a collective 60 hrs handcrafting their designer bag costumes.
Sesame Street
A group of besties handmade their costumes in 2019 but due to weather, then COVID, had to wait until this year to be in the Parade. Big Bird, Oscar, Elmo, The Count, Cookie Monster, Snuffleupagus were assembled with hot glue, duct tape, safety pins, tin foil, fleece and thrift store accessories. Tips: fleece is the most forgiving when sewing & colored crafters foam is easy to work with!
Shedd Aquarium
Rosa V. said, “My twin 3 year old boys were obsessed with visiting the Shedd Aquarium and they insisted they wanted to be ocean animals for Halloween. Then our whole family joined in to see their smiles!”
