“Coming of age is an animal experience that humans share on a global scale. ‘Liminal Space Race’ addresses the nebulous, yet frenetic paradigm shifts of growing up. At the end of the tunnel of adolescence and early adulthood is an unavoidable, rueful acceptance: a fleeting truth which spares no one, especially the queer people of yesterday, today, and tomorrow: We never really stop coming out.”

Sofi Vonn

Market Days 2023 Performer SOFI VONN 01

American-born, London-based electronic pop singer Sofi Vonn’s deep lyrics and light melodies create a set of contradictions that somehow fit together perfectly to tell a relatable narrative of youth. With her exceptional voice, she deftly expresses emotions and opinions on society, love, sexuality, and all the other things that everyone goes through.

Vonn knows about these things from personal experience, which has taken her across the world and back several times. Born and raised in New York City to German parents, she grew up in the picturesque, artistic West Village neighborhood. She discovered she loved singing after joining the choirs at both her school and at church.

Growing up, Vonn’s interest in music was varied enough that even now, she can subconsciously tap into all of these influences. This has given her the freedom to come up with an artistic style that is uniquely her own.

While she was in high school, Vonn and her family moved to Zürich, Switzerland. Her love of singing continued there, though she felt confused as she considered what to do post-graduation. “I liked music but I didn’t know how to get into it, because when I was applying to college for anything musical, they wanted me to be a Steinway Fellow already, basically,” she says.

Stymied, Vonn put her music dreams on hold, returning to the United States to attend Tulane University in New Orleans. She ended up earning a degree in psychology (with a German minor), but as fate would have it, she was brought back to music when she studied abroad in Berlin, Germany for a year.

“I loved Berlin, so I moved back there after I graduated from college – and that’s how I got into techno and DJing,” Vonn says. “The techno scene there is huge.” Besides DJing at a festival, she also studied sound engineering for a bit before finally landing a full-time job with the BMG record label.

BMG brought Vonn back to her hometown of New York City. Her work at the label taught her marketing skills that she then used to help her advance her DJ career at night. She became an in-demand house and techno DJ, booking numerous shows around the city for the next two years.

As she DJed, Vonn would often sing along to the music. Hearing her, a fellow DJ was impressed by her talent and hired her to sing on a track. It was the catalyst Vonn needed to make her return to the idea of seriously pursuing a singing career.

At the same time, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, giving Vonn even more incentive to think about what she really wanted to do – and in the end, she quit her record label job. “I had a great time working at BMG, but it just was time to go,” she says. “When corona happened, I realized that pursuing my own music career is what will truly make me happy.”

With all the knowledge she’d gained as a performer and at the record label, Vonn realized that she finally had both the skill and the experience that music schools wanted. She was accepted into several Masters degree programs, and chose to study popular music at the highly prestigious Goldsmiths, University of London.

Last September, Vonn made yet another trans-Atlantic move so she could begin her graduate studies. Her time there has already paid off: as a school project, she wrote the emotive song “Is It a Crime,” which she says “is about wanting a meaningful relationship and feeling embarrassed about it, but also being like, ‘Is it a crime?’” That song is set for release later this year.

Unlike many pop singers, Vonn writes all of her own material. A vibrant storyteller, her depth of feeling and love for her craft is evident in every track. Her warm and powerful voice is the perfect means for conveying her lyrics, which are at once introspective yet universal.

Concurrent with her formal music education, Vonn continues to learn about the business aspect of things whenever she can. She found an especially powerful ally when she met renowned music executive Charlie Walk (who helped launch the careers of Lorde, Ariana Grande, and The Weeknd, among many others). Impressed with Vonn’s voice and writing, Walk immediately offered to mentor her, bringing her into his prestigious Music Mastery program earlier this year.

Now that Vonn finally has the necessary experience and support, everything seems to be falling into place with her singing career. She recently recorded a number of songs in Los Angeles, which she plans to release as singles during the coming months. She’s also performed two well-received shows at the prestigious New York City clubs Arlene’s Grocery and Pete’s Candy Store, and she plans to do more shows now that she’s back in London to continue school.

Vonn is also keeping her DJ career going – but now, she is able to put techno remixes of her own songs into her playlists, such as the remix of her song “Stranger” that’s coming out on August 12. “That’s the beauty of what I’m doing now – it’s the best of both worlds,” she says of this multifaceted approach. “I’m making pop songs, having shows, having other people remix my pop songs. I already know how to DJ so I’ll play the songs. It’s so convenient!”

Vonn recently graduated from Goldsmiths. But beyond that, she is prepared to continue letting life lead her where it will. After all, that attitude seems to have worked out well for her so far. “I didn’t plan for what’s happening right now – but I know that everything I’ve done was necessary to get here now,” she says.

Wherever Vonn ends up, she’ll undoubtedly find more opportunities to create music that is authentic, honest, and real. Even though her colorful life has led her on a more wide-ranging path than what most people will follow, she is still able to make music that will resonate with listeners anywhere.

Betty Who

Betty Who

To understand where Betty Who currently stands in her career, it’s best to imagine her as she often stood as a kid: solo, in front of the bedroom mirror, belting out hits, dancing like everyone’s watching. Because as the Australian pop queen walked away from her record deal and in to her first independent album, she had a single mandate: “I am going to be the most me I can be.” That is, in part, why her third full-length statement is simply called Betty. It’s pure her: a brilliant swirl of pop—’80s, Y2K, and hyper-modern strains—that encompasses everything from intimate artful fare to darkly sexy bangers to full-on wedding reception shout-alongs. What’s more, these are songs about grown-woman emotions delivered by someone who rediscovered the drive and verve that fueled her rise through music in the first place. As Betty says, “It all came back to joy.”

Betty-Who-Market-Days-2023_BW-CK-DCS-scaled

There’s a reason Betty was tapped to remake the Queer Eye theme song for the uplifting series’ second season. It’s the same reason she’s soundtracked Pitch Perfect and made the Glee cast swoon, and that a certain legendary flash mob proposal video went viral to the tune of her 2012 debut single “Somebody Loves You.” Joy has always been in the music, but for Betty, her twelfth feeling had faded. “I didn’t understand how damaging it was to feel like I was never living up to expectation,” she says of her time on a major label. “When you’re in the middle of it, you think it’s driving you. When I came out the other side, I realized, no, I was devastated.” She wanted to handpick her team, sink or swim by her own choices, and share music while it’s fresh. With Betty, she did all of that and made an album that, as she puts it, “I’m more proud of than I could possibly say.”

The world got a taste of that with Betty’s first independent single “Ignore Me,” an uplifting ode to moving on set to warm, indie-tinged electropop. Likewise, synth-streaked dance cut “I Remember” takes on something sad—the dissonance that can bubble up in a relationship—and finds the sweetness there as Betty coos, “I don’t want perfect, I want you.” Our heroine not only split from her label in 2017, she got engaged, and the thrill of realizing you could spend your life with someone rings out on “Marry Me.” The song’s exuberance was inspired by the unabashed pop (namely Katy Perry) Betty loved as a teen. Meanwhile, the vintage JT-evoking “All This Woman” addresses a would-be lover but is really about Betty’s acceptance of her own body: “This is me saying to the man or woman I’m standing opposite, ‘This is what I want and you’re crazy if you don’t want it too.’”

These songs spilled out with a similar assuredness—among them, early teaser “Taste,” which Betty has described as “a little rock ‘n’ roll with just a touch of vampire fetish,” and Betty’s first official single, the achingly up-close, acoustic-powered “Between You & Me.” The process began in sessions between runs of her famously vibrant, intensely choreographed tour. She’d planned to write more when she came off the road, but instead realized she already had an album’s worth of songs she adored. So rather than iron them out in high-profile studios around Los Angeles, she absconded to a rental in Palm Springs with her two of her best friends, artist/producer Pretty Sister and decade-long collaborator Peter Thomas. They finished Betty in 10 days between shared meals and streaming sunshine. “It was one of the best times of my life,” recalls Betty. “I swear I’ll never make a record any other way.”

But that setting conjures the beginning of Betty Who, when the woman born Jessica Newham studied cello at Berklee during the week, then took the first train out to Providence so she could spend all weekend inventing her sound at classmate Peter’s family home. And that hustle itself mimics a theme of Betty’s childhood in Sydney: while her classical training began at age 4, she devoted every free second to Britney, Christina, *NSYNC, and MJ. The voices, the moves, the lyrics, the spectacle—she ate it all up, especially that feeling the best pop gives you: “When you hear it,” says Betty, “and go, ‘Oh my God, you literally wrote this about me.’ I’ve wanted to make music like that ever since.” In that spirit, Betty gives us what we need most right now: an excuse to dance in the mirror, license to trust our instinct, and knowledge that joy is never too far away.

Thea Austin

Thea Austin

THEA AUSTIN formerly of SNAPP!

Thea Tereese Austin is an American female dance/house singer/songwriter/composer from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

In 1991, she sang lead vocal on Snap!’s cross-Atlantic hit “Rhythm Is a Dancer”. Originally, Snap! band member Penny Ford was going to sing lead vocals but could not after she signed to Sony Music as a singer, whereas the rest of Snap! was signed to BMG Music. As she was not signed to Sony as a writer, she wrote “Rhythm Is a Dancer” and had Austin sing it. In an interview with Songfacts, Ford said that Austin was interviewing her for a magazine, and stated that she was a songwriter and asked if Ford could listen to her song. She described the song as “a good song, I can’t remember [its name]. (hums to herself) ‘Do You Believe In The Power of Love.’ Or ‘The Power of Love.'” Ford wanted that song for her self-titled album, and “needed to get rid of her so she didn’t need that song any more”, so she asked her if Austin had a passport and three days later she was sent on a plane to make “Rhythm Is a Dancer”.

Originally, “Rhythm Is a Dancer” was going to be released as the lead single, but after objections from Turbo B, “Colour of Love”, also featuring Austin on lead vocals, was released as the lead single. The song charted at #6 in France and Sweden, #9 in Germany but only #54 in the UK, so the two producers insisted that “Rhythm Is a Dancer” was released next. “Rhythm Is a Dancer” fared much better, charting at #1 in the UK, France, Netherlands, Italy and Germany, and #5 in the US. Austin left Snap! shortly after the release of The Madman’s Return in a hemorrhage of members also involving Turbo B and Ford.

In 1999, Austin teamed with Marc Pomeroy to form Soulsearcher, which had a #8 hit on the UK Singles Chart with “Can’t Get Enough” which drew inspiration from and sampled Gary’s Gang’s “Let’s Lovedance Tonight” and later on that year charted at #20 on the Dance Music/Club Play Singles chart. The duo performed at The Prince’s Trust Party in the Park all-star concert in London in 1999. Their second single, “Do It to Me Again”, charted at #32 on the UK Singles Chart (AllMusic’s entry for Soulsearcher states that the song charted at #13) after which Austin and Pomeroy split up.

Austin joined Pusaka and wrote and sung lead vocals for their 2001 hit “You’re the Worst Thing for Me”, which was awarded the Best Underground 12″ Award at Miami’s Winter Music Conference in March 2002 and charted at #34 on the Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales chart and #1 on the Dance Music/Club Play Singles chart.

The Jersey Girls

JerseyGirls

This is a story of friendship, passion, and love for music…

Diana and Sonya are originally from Bulgaria, and Iris is from Ukraine. The girls moved to the United States seeking better opportunities and a brighter future.  All three of them started singing at a very young age and performed as solo singers with a variety of different bands. They met in 2016 by coincidence, but now they believe that everything has happened for a reason.  Once they realized that they all shared the love of harmonizing and their voices fit perfectly together, they knew they were on to something great!

Iris’ angelic voice hits impressively high notes with full strength in the Jersey Girls’ pieces.
Sonya’s genuine, yet powerful voice brings an extraordinary range to the table.
And Diana Jadé fills out the sounds with a soulful, raspy quality.

Soon after they met the three of them began practicing four days a week while working day jobs and simultaneously performing gigs on the weekends. They became best friends and spent almost every day together –  singing, dancing, shopping, traveling and most importantly, planning their future and their musical journey together.

Almost two years later, all the hard work, sleepless nights, road trips and uphill battles finally started paying off. The Jersey Girls have now proudly become one of Chicago-land’s most popular and beloved cover bands. They were invited to perform the lead piece from the soundtrack of the Broadway musical “Dreamgirls” on FOX television in the summer of 2017. The same year they also appeared two times on Chicago’s very own channel –  WGN, performing a dance/pop medley and Christmas music. In November, 2017 the Jersey Girls had their debut on the national music scene performing a sold-out show in PARIS Hotel, Las Vegas. In the summer of 2018 they toured the country, performing state fairs, festivals, and theatre shows in over 15 states. The Jersey Girls are now, as venue owners often like to say – “raising the roof” every weekend  in the Chicago-land area and all around the Midwest. With their harmonies, choreographies, eye-catching costumes, and high energy performance they easily become the heart of every celebration. Expect to see them on the stage, on the dance-floor, by the bar, or even at your table!
They are best known for their energetic interactive performances where guests often feel as if they are part of the show.

Whether they sing in front of ten, one hundred, or one thousand people, the Jersey Girls bring their full energy and vocal capacity to EVERY show and put a smile on EVERYONE’s face in the audience!

Steve Grand

STeveGrand 1

July 6, 2018, marked the release of the long-anticipated sophomore album from Steve Grand, not the end of me.  It hit #2 on the iTunes Pop Chart, #10 on Billboard’s Independent Album Chart, and #78 on Billboard’s Top Album Chart. It was released independently on his own label, Grand Nation LLC. The album includes 12 new tracks, all written and composed by Grand. It also features alternate versions of 3 of the songs. Grand says of the tracks, “This album is autobiographical; very personal, somber and reflective.”

“Writing this album was an exercise in catharsis,” says Grand. “I’m more unfiltered on this album and explore some of the internal and external challenges I’ve faced over the last few years.” The album’s title track, “not the end of me”, is a song Grand wrote when a long-time relationship was coming to an end.  “Breaking up can be long and drawn-out, painful and ugly.  This one certainly was,” Grand said.  “It was trying and exhausting, (and) this song deals with all of that, as well as the resolution that this is ‘not the end of me.”

Grand also predicts “don’t let the light in” will be a favorite among his fans.  “I wrote it within the last few months before I became sober.  At that time, I was reflecting on the way I had been living my life over the last few years that my song ‘All-American Boy’ blew up, in 2013,” he said.  “I felt isolated and realized I was dealing with that isolation in some unhealthy ways.”

With the release of his first album, All American Boy, in 2015, Steve Grand broke the mold for the traditional singer-songwriter.  Having self-funded a viral video of the title track, then fan funding the release and creating a vocal and energetic fanbase, the openly gay artist from Chicago created a place for himself in the music industry and hasn’t looked back since.  The past 3 years have seen Grand touring across the world, gathering new energetic fans, and creating new music.

With over 18 million views on YouTube, a #3 and #10 album on The Billboard Independent Album charts, and one of the most successful music Kickstarter campaigns ever under his belt, Grand has not just broken the rules but has changed the game in how to be a successful singer-songwriter in this era.

not the end of me is available on Steve Grand’s website, at all live shows, and across all digital download and streaming platforms

Supes Base

supesbase

Supes Base [which stems from a culturally relevant quip of “the super basic way of saying ‘super basic'”], whose real name is Justina Nguyen, has been immersed in music all of her life–classically trained in piano, oboe, and percussion. Her music journey started out as an extracurricular skill and activity that was imposed upon her by her parents as a young child morphed into a lifelong passion.

About 4 years ago, Supes Base decided to reincarnate her musical chops through the curation of the music as a DJ, as well as the orchestration of human connection throughout a space or environment–encouraging unspoken conversation between performer and audience. Forming that visceral bond with other people can be so powerful; even the slightest nod, cracked smile, or foot tap amplifies those intrinsic micro-moments we all live for.

As a good vibestigator, her fortes are: 1) her contagious presence that gets people to feel the groove and stay in the moment + 2) her ability to transcend + blend a variety of musical genres that’s accessible to everyone—taking them through an odyssey of movement. Genres include but are not limited to: contemporary classical, jazz, doo-wop, funk, soul, disco, new wave/industrial, r+b, hip-hop, indie rock/electronica, lo-fi beats, chillwave, synth-pop, soul electronica, house, techno, experimental sounds across genres, and so much in between.

Roy Kinsey & Friends

RoyKinsey

Chicago-born and raised, Roy Kinsey is a bit of an anomaly when it comes to tradition in his respective industries. where being a black, queer-identified, rapper, and librarian may be an intimidating choice for some, Roy Kinsey’s non-conformist ideology has informed his 6th album, and self-proclaimed, “best work yet,” Kinsey: A Memoir. KINSEY: A Memoir, arguably more poignant than Blackie: A Story by Roy Kinsey, captures a dark, sinister, yet sincere, and potent musical performance by Kinsey. Kinsey’s observations are strong on ‘Memoir,’; shaped by early traumas that threatened to debilitate his belief in himself as well as the abilities of his family. It is the manifestation of a queer man, in a black body, coming of age in Chicago.”

Featured on the cover of major local publications, such as the Chicago Reader and the Chicago Tribune, in and on major national, and international publications like Billboard, LA Times, NPR, WBEZ’s Vocalo, WGCI, and the RedEye, his “deft skill for storytelling,” is proving to solidify him and his contributions in the cannon of black music and literature. Kinsey’s video BSAYF (Bitch, She Ain’t You Friend), exploring black queer identity and spirituality, premiered at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), the Art Institute of Chicago, the Harold Washington Cultural Center, and the DuSable Museum. Kinsey has shared his lyrics on the stages of the legendary First Avenue in Minnesota, Thalia Hall, Soho House, Lincoln Hall, Logan Square Auditorium, Schuba’s, and Empty Bottle, and has recently done a series of performances/exhibitions with the Chicago Public Library’s seasonal book and theme programming of race and music, One Book, One Chicago.

His professional development in librarianship has fueled his desire for self-examination and then reporting his findings, in rhyme. He intends and believes the success of his present and future creative works will touch the hearts of many because it comes from the heart.

Roy Kinsey is a librarian in the Teen Services/Youmedia department for Chicago Public Libraries.

Orisun

Orisun

Chicago indie-rock duo Orisun indulge in their lo-fi proclivities without ever giving in to slacker entropy. On their self-released debut EP, May’s This Is Orisun, multi-instrumentalist Kai Black and front person Asha Adisa artfully employ gossamer guitars, sophisticated keys, precisely programmed percussion with dampened drums, and relaxed, alluring vocals to calibrate moods that test the bounds of tranquility. Orisun can draw you in quickly—they give the gloomy atmosphere of “Miserable” a dose of animated energy with a straight-to-the-gut grunge riff. This Is Orisun is only about 16 minutes long, but Black and Adisa don’t need much time to establish their band as one to watch. (Bio from Chicago Reader)

Pabllo Vittar

Pabllo Vittar

Brazil’s most famous drag queen, Pabllo Vittar, was always fascinated by the feminine universe. When she realized that drag queen could also act and sing she decided she could do that as well. It all worked out great.

She was born in São Luis (Maranhão) in November 1st 1994, Phabullo Rodrigues da Silva – birth name – made her first TV appearance as Pabllo Vittar in 2014, for a local TV in Uberlândia/Minas Gerais, where she lived in her teenage years. But it was only in 2015 that she started to get attention on social media, after releasing “Open Bar”, a Brazilian version of Major Lazer’s “Lean On”. In less than a month the video hit a million views on YouTube.

Already a superstar on the LGBTQ community, she started to have mainstream attention in early 2017, when she released her first album “Vai Passar Mal”, with the brazilian hits sensations “K.O.” and “Corpo Sensual”. Being invited to sing in Rock in Rio with Fergie and the release of “Sua Cara” with Major Lazer and Anitta brought even more attention to her.

In 2017 she was the first Brazilian artist to have three songs on Spotify top 5 (“K.O.”, “Corpo Sensual” and “Sua Cara”) and, in 2018, her second album, “Não Para Não”, was the most streamed album in the first 24 hours, with more than 3 million plays.

“I started drag because I was always fascinated by the feminine universe. When I found out that there were drag queen acting and singing I thought: that I can actually do!” Pabllo says.

In 2018 she got her place in important vehicles around the world, like Billboard Social 50, Paper Magazine and was the first Brazilian artist to present “Beauty Secrets” by the American Vogue.

In the past 2 years she was nominated to 27 awards, including a Latin Grammy (first drag queen nominated to a Grammy Award) and EMA (Europe Music Awards) in 2018. Of those she won 7 of them, including Best New Artist and Song of the Year on the main Brazilian awards. Also in 2018 she was the only Brazilian on the top 20 of the most played albums of 2018 on Last.Fm.

Nina Sky

Nina Sky

In 2004, recording artists Nicole and Natalie Albino better known as Nina Sky blazed the music scene with their unique sound; a fusion of hip hop, r&b, pop and reggae. The identical twin’s infectious debut song, “Move Ya Body” and follow-up tracks “Turning Me On,” and “Oye Mi Canto,” not only became club anthems, but propelled the group to Billboard chart success and collaborations with Grammy Award-winning artists and producers including Bruno Mars, Diplo, Major Lazer, Rick Ross, Betty Wright, Aventura, Sean Paul, and Salaam Remi.

Following the success of their major label debut, Nina Sky, the New York City-based Puerto Rican duo have been traveling the world touring and garnering global recognition while perfecting their artistry. Their independently released projects The Other Side (2010), and Nicole and Natalie (2012) received coverage from numerous outlets including SPIN, The Fader, Pitchfork, Vice, MTV, and VIBE.

“We’ve been performing around the world endlessly since we were teenagers,” says Natalie. “It has not only opened our eyes culturally but has inspired our music over the years. Nicole and I have grown tremendously since our first album and are excited to share our new tunes.“

Now as married women, Natalie is a new mom and has taken on the role as the lead singer and songwriter for the group. For the last decade Nicole has honed her skills as a producer and notable DJ—curating music and spinning for some of the world’s most iconic brands including Nike, Opening Ceremony, Christie’s, The Glaad Media Awards, and Cavalli. Their progression artistically is evident not only sonically but is displayed as their ever-changing sense of style has developed them into fashion icons both on the New York City scene and in pages of fashion magazines.

“It’s an amazing feeling for us to still live out our dreams while staying true to who we are as artists,” says Nicole. “We’re truly blessed to not only do what we love, but to have a supportive fan base that have shown us love throughout the years no matter what.”

Nina Sky continues to prove that the sky is most definitely the limit. The group was recently enlisted by London-based producer TroyBoi for his 2015 smash hit, “Afterhours,” which also features Diplo and has 11.8 million plays on SoundCloud and over 7 million views on YouTube. With experience, self-awareness, and an array of musical projects under their belt, the twins reconnected with their fans on a massive level with their 2016 single, “Champion Lover” via Tommy Boy Records.  The group continues to record new music, host a radio show on Apple Music Beats 1, and tour worldwide both performing live and DJing.
