As June comes to a close, so does the vibrant celebration of Pride Month. In the heart of Chicago’s Northalsted neighborhood, the Rainbow Tour Pride Bar Crawl was a standout event that encapsulated everything joyful and inclusive about Pride. We had the pleasure of attending this colorful extravaganza and it was an unforgettable experience!
RainbowCrawl6 1
One of the highlights of the Rainbow Tour Bar Crawl was undoubtedly the swag. Participants were decked out in an array of rainbow-colored accessories—from hats and sunglasses to beads and flags. Each venue along the crawl offered something special, whether it was a complimentary visor, t-shirt, or a fun sticker to add to your collection. It was a fantastic way to show off your pride and take a piece of the celebration home with you.
Of course, what’s a bar crawl without some delicious drinks? With 10 participating locations, attendees were guaranteed a GOOD time. The participating bars and restaurants pulled out all the stops with their Pride-themed cocktails and specials. Starting off strong at Sidetrack, all participants were able to sample free Tito’s Vodka to kick off the crawl. From the North End, Replay, Progress Bar, to Lark, each drink we had was amazing.
Once our group acquired stamps from all locations, we returned to Sidetrack for one final drink and more prizes. Attendees also had the opportunity to enter a raffle by participating in a scavenger hunt centered around the historical Northalsted Pylons. Participants were encouraged to read a bit about the history of the LGBTQ+ community along the crawl and answer questions to win even more swag.
Cheers to love, cheers to diversity, and cheers to a future where every month feels like Pride Month. Be sure to keep an eye out for more fun crawls and events throughout the year.
Special thanks to all our participating venues and sponsors.
Summer is heating up in Northalsted! We have the perfect lineup to polish off Pride Month and even more to get you through the week! Stop by Big Gay Sals for a slice to fuel up before the Pride Bar Crawl then dance your heart out at Hydrate with DJ KidRiot & VJ George G!

The recent passing of Jose Guzman (above right), co-founder of Northalsted Chicago’s Las Mananitas restaurant on April 23, 2024, is a significant loss to the community. Together with his life partner, Elio Solis (above left), they established Las Mananitas in 1984, which has been a beloved fixture in Northalsted for 40 years.
Mass will be celebrated Monday, May 13, at 3pm at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church located at 1351 W Evergreen Ave, Chicago, IL, 60642. After mass, a mariachi band will offer musical tribute to Jose’s life and those who cherish his memory.

Jose Guzman (left) – Las Mananitas Restaurant Chicago
Jose was one of eleven children born in Cuernavaca, Mexico, to Lorenzo Guzman and Willibalda Altamirano.
As a young man, Jose attended seminary in Spain. Though his life would take a different path, his education and experience would stay with him as he grew into a worldly man with a love of travel. His venturesome spirit led him to many firsts when he eventually settled into Chicago, which would become his lifelong home.
An actor and model, Jose helped to break down barriers in the industry and define the city’s diverse identity by performing the first Spanish-language municipal advertisements.
Jose Guzman
In addition to his stagecraft, Jose was a gifted writer and poet, and his love of the written word pervaded many of his endeavours. Of these, his greatest success was his pride and joy: Las Mananitas, the restaurant he operated with partner Elio Solis for more than forty years.
las mananitas northalsted chicago
There, his creativity reached into the marketing, the kitchen, and even into the way the restaurant ran. As beloved by its team and alumni as by its surrounding neighborhood, Las Mananitas created a tightly-knit, vibrant community around itself. From this home base, Jose was able to thrive as the kind, generous, funny man he is remembered and missed as.
Jose Guzman
In addition to his parents, Jose joins his siblings Aurelia, Rodolfo, and Antonio Guzman at rest. He is survived and remembered by siblings Lorenzo, Raquel, Javier, Aurelia, Jesus, Evaristo, and Willibalda Guzman; generations of loving nieces and nephews; and his indispensible partner Elio.

The new LGBTQ+ owned restaurant is looking to bring more late-night food to Northalsted with New York style pizza by the slice (’til 5am Fri & Sat), plus a full bar and charming patio (coming soon).
Besides a selection of thin crust pizza, menu highlights include Spicy Honey or Garlic Parmesan Wings, Fried Brussels Appetizer, Grilled Chicken Sandwich, Dulce de Leche Sprinkle Cake and Margaritas.
The restaurant’s name is a loving reference to the chef behind the pizza, Sal Mora. Business partner Mike Miller says, “It has to do with his heart and his smile. Anytime that guy walks into the room, he’s always the happiest and kindest person there.”
Sal and Mike partnered on the restaurant based on Sal’s history and expertise. “I started work right out of high school in a pizza place on the South Side, learning as much as I could about the business over the past 18 years. For Big Gay Sal’s, we were determined to be right here on the strip and have been welcomed with open arms. We’re looking forward to supporting the queer community through partnerships, promotions, special events, and job opportunities.”
As an LGBTQ+-owned business in a historically LGBTQ+ neighborhood, Big Gay Sal’s Pizza slogan is, “Serving the community one slice at a time.” For every slice of pizza sold, Big Gay Sal’s will donate to LGBTQ+ organizations and causes.
Miller, who owns a marketing agency, also has experience working in restaurants/bars, as well as philanthropy. Miller most recently was a chair for the Santa Speedo Run at Sidetrack, a fundraiser for the Center on Halsted, which raised more than $152,000!
The next time you’re in need of late night/post bar munchies or an anytime fix for some good eats, stop by or order online today at Northalsted’s newest gay joint!

Chicago’s Beloved Holiday Fundraiser Continues to Raise Merriment in Support of the LGBTQ+ Community
Chicago, IL – The eagerly anticipated Santa Speedo Run Northalsted is back Saturday, December 2, 2023, promising a day filled with laughter and goodwill. The annual event will kick off at noon, with an entertaining afternoon of festivities that culminate in a fun 1-Mile run for a great cause. All proceeds from this annual gathering will once again benefit Center on Halsted, a cornerstone of support for the LGBTQ+ community in Chicago.
Originally conceived over a decade ago by the visionary duo of Karl Sponholtz and Jeffrey Colgan, this event began as a small gathering among friends. Today, it stands as one of Chicago’s premier fun-runs, having raised an impressive $600,000 to bolster programs and services that uplift the Chicagoland LGBTQ+ community.
Colgan and Sponholtz, the founders of the Santa Speedo Run Northalsted event, shared their sentiments about the event’s growth, saying, “Santa Speedo Run Northalsted has been dear to our hearts since we created it. It has been so rewarding to watch it grow each year, raising vital funds to support the health and well-being of LGBTQ+ people across Chicagoland.”
Over 300 participants will gather at Sidetrack, located at 3349 N. Halsted, when doors open at noon before embarking on the charity run at 2 p.m. In total, more than 1,000 enthusiastic individuals will come together to cheer on participants donned in little more than swimsuits and creative holiday-themed outfits.
Registration to join this festive occasion, whether as an individual or part of a team, opens Wednesday, November 1, 2023. For complete information and to sign up, please visit our official website: santaspeedorun.centeronhalsted.org.
Supporters are encouraged to contribute in advance on our website. Donations will also be accepted at Sidetrack on event day. Fundraising efforts continue through December 31st.
Last year’s event, powered by the collective support of participants and donors, raised a record breaking $117,000 for Center on Halsted.
The festivities don’t conclude at the finish line! Join us for an unforgettable after-party at Sidetrack, featuring performances by renowned Chicago drag entertainers. The party promises a day of excitement with prizes, games, and an awards ceremony to honor top individual and team fundraisers.
