Upwards of 60,000 festival attendees gather each year to celebrate LGBTQ+ life, culture and community at Chicago Pride Fest (June 17-18, 2023). The event is organized by the Northalsted Business Alliance chamber of commerce and takes place the weekend before the 53rd annual Chicago Pride Parade (June 25th, organized independently).

Northalsted Vice-President and lead event organizer, Mark Liberson, is excited for Chicago Pride Fest’s 22nd anniversary, “We come together in June to celebrate community and uplift each other in the struggle for equality and human rights. Despite decades of progress, the need for Pride has not lessened, as outright attacks, especially on transgender and BIPOC members of our community, are ongoing.”

A $15 suggested donation at entry helps pay Chicago Pride Fest performers, event workers, and funds community programs. Generous public donations paid for the creation and ongoing maintenance of the Chicago Pride Crosswalks: 14 rainbow paved neighborhood intersections make up the longest installation of its kind in the world, and the programming supported by Northalsted, including DEI training.

Plans To Go Ahead With Market Days This August After Cancellation Last Year

95303713 1981257758684694 9111113136609427456 n 768x512 1

After being called off last year for the coronavirus pandemic, plans are on to resume the annual Northalsted Market Days festival this August.
From: CBS 2 Chicago on May 5, 2021

The Northalsted Business Alliance reported in a news release issued Tuesday that it hopes to host Market Days from Aug. 6 through Aug. 8 – adding a Friday night edition for the first time.

“While vaccinations increase and the world begins to see some light in the pandemic fight, organizers are in full planning mode to produce the iconic event,” organizers said in a news release.

The first Market Days was held in August 1982. Since then, the LGBTQ+ positive event has grown to occupy the full half-mile of Halsted Street between Addison Street and Belmont Avenue – what was long known as the Boystown strip.

The festival features all-day lineups of music on five stages, as well as vendors, arts and crats, food and drinks, and dancing in the streets.

“We look forward to the possibility of welcoming neighbors and visitors alike to this iconic event,” Northalsted Business Alliance President Ramesh Ariyanayakam said in the release. “While planning is underway, we will remain in continual contact with the City of Chicago, the State of Illinois and monitor the CDC guidelines to be flexible in our approach to meet all necessary requirements to produce a safe event.”

Organizers also hope to hold a Chicago Pride Fest at an unspecified date. The festival is usually held during Pride Month in June.

As to the Chicago Pride Parade – traditionally held the last Sunday in June – organizers have been quoted in published reports as saying it was “highly unlikely” to go ahead on the traditional schedule this year, but it could happen in the late summer or early fall.

The Pride Parade was canceled for the pandemic last year, while the Pride Fest was replaced by virtual events.

Rainbow Crosswalks Debut in Northalsted

A mile-long stretch in Northalsted started getting colorful, rainbow crosswalks on Tuesday. All 14 crosswalks will be painted by mid-June and run parallel to Halsted Street.

The Chicago Rainbow Pride Crosswalks project will link up the gold and rainbow ring pylons in Northalsted between Melrose Street and Bradley Place. The pylons are more than just a neighborhood signifier. The structures include The Legacy Walk which features bronze plaques of important LGBTQ people. The corridor and pylons will soon become a city landmark.

The 14th crosswalk will be dedicated to the transgender community, and instead of rainbow stripes, it will have blue, pink and white stripes found on the transgender flag. That crosswalk will be at Melrose Street, south of Howard Brown Health Center.

Also, the clinic, which focuses on LGBTQ health, just installed a mural that honors the queer and non-binary community. It features a portrait of Chicago-based Kiam Marcelo Junio, a holistic healer and interdisciplinary artist. The piece is by artists Sandra Antongiorgi, Andy Bellomo, and Sam Kirk—and the first in a series of LGBTQ tribute murals.

The rainbow crosswalks project was funded through donations collected at Chicago Pride Fest and Northalsted Market Days.

The neighborhood will celebrate the new crosswalk and landmark status to come with a dedication ceremony and Pride month kick-off at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 30.

Northalsted Gets Rainbow Crosswalk in time for Pride

Boystown rainbow crosswalk

Chicago, IL – More than 100 North American cities have implemented rainbow crosswalks to commemorate their local LGBTQ communities and soon Chicago will be one of them.

The Northalsted Business Alliance is preparing to install 14 Pride-themed rainbow crosswalks on the one-mile stretch of North Halsted from Melrose north to Bradley, excluding Addison.

“As an internationally recognized and historic landmark neighborhood, Northalsted has been a place of acceptance and diversity for decades. These crosswalks show our commitment to maintaining a thriving LGBTQ community,” said Northalsted President Ramesh Ariyanayakam.

Thirteen of the crosswalks will feature the rainbow design that represents diversity and has become an inclusive symbol of the worldwide LGBTQ pride movement since the 1970’s. The 14th crosswalk at Melrose will be dedicated to the transgender community with the inclusion of the blue, pink and white stripes found on the transgender flag. This crosswalk is south of the Howard Brown Health Center which features a wall mural that honors the queer and non-binary community.

TimeOut Chicago Pride Month Events

Pride Fest Chicago® June 16-17, 2018 is one of many Chicago Pride Events in June. Even though June is no longer recognized by the White House as national Pride Month, the celebration will go on!

The Chicago Pride Parade is a Chicago tradition spanning more than four decades, but celebrations of gay pride have long since expanded beyond just the Northalsted parade. The big event on the last Sunday in June is now accompanied by Pride weekend festivities in alternative gayborhoods like Andersonville and Rogers Park. And LGBTQ-themed cultural offerings including theater, comedy shows and queer-friendly concerts dot the June calendar. We’ll keep adding to the list as dates firm up and new events are announced.

Crank up your favorite gay anthem and start planning out your Pride.

Biz Bash’s Top 100 Events of 2017

2010 MD 199

The Windy City is home to dozens of annual events that put it on the international map—and not all of them center on celebrity chefs.

Chicago is also home to massive musical events eg. Lollapalooza in addition to trade shows that see brisk business, fund-raisers that rake in impressive sums of cash, and a holiday parade that wraps the entire Miracle Mile in lights.

As with all lists, this one is subjective. To choose and rank the annual events on this list, Biz Bash looks at several factors, including economic impact, buzz, innovation, and an event’s prominence within the communities it intends to serve.

BizBash is North America’s #1 source of ideas, news, and resources for event and meeting professionals. Each month nearly 225,000 unique users look to BizBash for venue discovery, event style, technology, and tools for their next event.
