Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus

CGMC FEATURE

The Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus (CGMC) has been an integral part of Chicago’s cultural and gay communities since 1983. For the last three decades, we have entertained audiences across the continent with innovative musical programming exploring everything from love to politics to the sometimes fabulous, sometimes challenging world of being gay-often all at the same time. Our always-memorable performances have included original musical revues; five popular productions celebrating the Sidetrack show tune experience; full-length book musicals including The Wizard of Oz, The Mikado, H.M.S. Pinafore and our original work – Ten Commandments – The Musical; traditional choral concerts and intimate cabaret presentations-all punctuated with our signature joyous irreverence.

Supes Base

supesbase

Supes Base [which stems from a culturally relevant quip of “the super basic way of saying ‘super basic'”], whose real name is Justina Nguyen, has been immersed in music all of her life–classically trained in piano, oboe, and percussion. Her music journey started out as an extracurricular skill and activity that was imposed upon her by her parents as a young child morphed into a lifelong passion.

About 4 years ago, Supes Base decided to reincarnate her musical chops through the curation of the music as a DJ, as well as the orchestration of human connection throughout a space or environment–encouraging unspoken conversation between performer and audience. Forming that visceral bond with other people can be so powerful; even the slightest nod, cracked smile, or foot tap amplifies those intrinsic micro-moments we all live for.

As a good vibestigator, her fortes are: 1) her contagious presence that gets people to feel the groove and stay in the moment + 2) her ability to transcend + blend a variety of musical genres that’s accessible to everyone—taking them through an odyssey of movement. Genres include but are not limited to: contemporary classical, jazz, doo-wop, funk, soul, disco, new wave/industrial, r+b, hip-hop, indie rock/electronica, lo-fi beats, chillwave, synth-pop, soul electronica, house, techno, experimental sounds across genres, and so much in between.

Roy Kinsey & Friends

RoyKinsey

Chicago-born and raised, Roy Kinsey is a bit of an anomaly when it comes to tradition in his respective industries. where being a black, queer-identified, rapper, and librarian may be an intimidating choice for some, Roy Kinsey’s non-conformist ideology has informed his 6th album, and self-proclaimed, “best work yet,” Kinsey: A Memoir. KINSEY: A Memoir, arguably more poignant than Blackie: A Story by Roy Kinsey, captures a dark, sinister, yet sincere, and potent musical performance by Kinsey. Kinsey’s observations are strong on ‘Memoir,’; shaped by early traumas that threatened to debilitate his belief in himself as well as the abilities of his family. It is the manifestation of a queer man, in a black body, coming of age in Chicago.”

Featured on the cover of major local publications, such as the Chicago Reader and the Chicago Tribune, in and on major national, and international publications like Billboard, LA Times, NPR, WBEZ’s Vocalo, WGCI, and the RedEye, his “deft skill for storytelling,” is proving to solidify him and his contributions in the cannon of black music and literature. Kinsey’s video BSAYF (Bitch, She Ain’t You Friend), exploring black queer identity and spirituality, premiered at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), the Art Institute of Chicago, the Harold Washington Cultural Center, and the DuSable Museum. Kinsey has shared his lyrics on the stages of the legendary First Avenue in Minnesota, Thalia Hall, Soho House, Lincoln Hall, Logan Square Auditorium, Schuba’s, and Empty Bottle, and has recently done a series of performances/exhibitions with the Chicago Public Library’s seasonal book and theme programming of race and music, One Book, One Chicago.

His professional development in librarianship has fueled his desire for self-examination and then reporting his findings, in rhyme. He intends and believes the success of his present and future creative works will touch the hearts of many because it comes from the heart.

Roy Kinsey is a librarian in the Teen Services/Youmedia department for Chicago Public Libraries.

Orisun

Orisun

Chicago indie-rock duo Orisun indulge in their lo-fi proclivities without ever giving in to slacker entropy. On their self-released debut EP, May’s This Is Orisun, multi-instrumentalist Kai Black and front person Asha Adisa artfully employ gossamer guitars, sophisticated keys, precisely programmed percussion with dampened drums, and relaxed, alluring vocals to calibrate moods that test the bounds of tranquility. Orisun can draw you in quickly—they give the gloomy atmosphere of “Miserable” a dose of animated energy with a straight-to-the-gut grunge riff. This Is Orisun is only about 16 minutes long, but Black and Adisa don’t need much time to establish their band as one to watch. (Bio from Chicago Reader)

Nina Sky

Nina Sky

In 2004, recording artists Nicole and Natalie Albino better known as Nina Sky blazed the music scene with their unique sound; a fusion of hip hop, r&b, pop and reggae. The identical twin’s infectious debut song, “Move Ya Body” and follow-up tracks “Turning Me On,” and “Oye Mi Canto,” not only became club anthems, but propelled the group to Billboard chart success and collaborations with Grammy Award-winning artists and producers including Bruno Mars, Diplo, Major Lazer, Rick Ross, Betty Wright, Aventura, Sean Paul, and Salaam Remi.

Following the success of their major label debut, Nina Sky, the New York City-based Puerto Rican duo have been traveling the world touring and garnering global recognition while perfecting their artistry. Their independently released projects The Other Side (2010), and Nicole and Natalie (2012) received coverage from numerous outlets including SPIN, The Fader, Pitchfork, Vice, MTV, and VIBE.

“We’ve been performing around the world endlessly since we were teenagers,” says Natalie. “It has not only opened our eyes culturally but has inspired our music over the years. Nicole and I have grown tremendously since our first album and are excited to share our new tunes.“

Now as married women, Natalie is a new mom and has taken on the role as the lead singer and songwriter for the group. For the last decade Nicole has honed her skills as a producer and notable DJ—curating music and spinning for some of the world’s most iconic brands including Nike, Opening Ceremony, Christie’s, The Glaad Media Awards, and Cavalli. Their progression artistically is evident not only sonically but is displayed as their ever-changing sense of style has developed them into fashion icons both on the New York City scene and in pages of fashion magazines.

“It’s an amazing feeling for us to still live out our dreams while staying true to who we are as artists,” says Nicole. “We’re truly blessed to not only do what we love, but to have a supportive fan base that have shown us love throughout the years no matter what.”

Nina Sky continues to prove that the sky is most definitely the limit. The group was recently enlisted by London-based producer TroyBoi for his 2015 smash hit, “Afterhours,” which also features Diplo and has 11.8 million plays on SoundCloud and over 7 million views on YouTube. With experience, self-awareness, and an array of musical projects under their belt, the twins reconnected with their fans on a massive level with their 2016 single, “Champion Lover” via Tommy Boy Records.  The group continues to record new music, host a radio show on Apple Music Beats 1, and tour worldwide both performing live and DJing.

Katie Kadan

KatieKadan

Katie Kadan is a Chicago-based blues and soul singer/songwriter whose meteoric rise to “one-name” status was recently launched by making it to the top 4 finale and global crowd-favorite on NBC’s The Voice. Born, raised and living in Chicago, Kadan’s epic vocal prowess is a force of nature. Her blues-infused style of soul-bearing belting is Katie’s moniker on her original and familiar songs alike, with a constant presence of her roots in the church choirs. Kadan’s passion for song is equally matched by the power, range, control and musicality in her voice, where she can easily flip from R&B to gut-wrenching rock to songs of longing angst with her signature playful growl.

Katie has also been an advocate for confidence and body positivity. She’s opened up about her years of insecurities, as well as how she overcame them to become a confident performer. This has helped Katie connect to her legions of fans on a deeper level, and she admitted that she’s been flooded with messages on Twitter and Instagram by those who have been inspired by her story. “I feel I have done my job if people who have been inspired by my story start to talk about it more and do something about it,” Katie explained. “It can be scary to be vulnerable and to put yourself out there and talk about your insecurities and to work through that whole process and to have people reach out and say they feel braver because they watch my story. It makes them want to stick it out and makes them want to change things up. If it makes people want to say they like themselves more, that’s awesome. If I can make people feel better…that’s wonderful.”

Ty Herndon

Ty Herndon

The Grammy-nominated and Dove award-winning recording artist has the ability to connect with an audience far beyond his onstage performance. More than 20 years into his career, Herndon shows no signs of slowing down.

Herndon made his chart debut in 1995 with “What Mattered Most,” which became his first No. 1 song and garnered a Song of the Year award (Music Row Magazine). It was also the title track to his debut album, which debuted on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and had the biggest first-week shipment in the history of Epic Records’ Nashville. Between 1995 and 2002, Herndon charted 17 singles, including his three No.1s and numerous top 10 hits, such as “I Want My Goodbye Back,” “Loved Too Much,” “A Man Holding On,” and “Hands of a Working Man.” He topped the charts in 1996 with the single “Living in a Moment” and again in 1998 with “It Must Be Love.”

In 2014, Ty was the first major male country artist to publicly come out as gay in an exclusive with People magazine. He received an outpouring of support that only strengthened his relationship with fans and the country music community, all while expanding his reach to new and diverse audiences. Shortly after, he made history when he hosted a first-of-its-kind country music event, The Concert for Love and Acceptance. The event, designed to raise awareness and support for LGBTQ youth and families, received national attention from Boston Globe, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Tonight, and many more. Since the launch of the event, Herndon has partnered with GLAAD to produce the event each year and created the Foundation For Love & Acceptance in 2020 to further his work on behalf of LGBTQ acceptance.

Ty found himself back at No. 1 in 2020 — this time on iTunes with his remake of “Orphans of God,” a collaboration with Kristin Chenoweth and Paul Cardall featured on his holiday release, Regifted. He is currently in the studio writing and recording a new album — his first of all new music since 2016’s House On Fire.

A portion of the proceeds will be gifted to:

The Sylvia Rivera Law Project (@sylviariveralawproject) – https://srlp.org

Steve Grand

SteveGrand

July 6, 2018, marked the release of the long-anticipated sophomore album from Steve Grand, not the end of me.  It hit #2 on the iTunes Pop Chart, #10 on Billboard’s Independent Album Chart, and #78 on Billboard’s Top Album Chart. It was released independently on his own label, Grand Nation LLC. The album includes 12 new tracks, all written and composed by Grand. It also features alternate versions of 3 of the songs. Grand says of the tracks, “This album is autobiographical; very personal, somber and reflective. Writing this album was an exercise in catharsis.” He says, “I’m more unfiltered on this album and explore some of the internal and external challenges I’ve faced over the last few years.”

The album’s title track, “not the end of me”, is a song Grand wrote when a long-time relationship was coming to an end.  “Breaking up can be long and drawn-out, painful and ugly.  This one certainly was,” Grand said.  “It was trying and exhausting, (and) this song deals with all of that, as well as the resolution that this is ‘not the end of me.”

Grand also predicts “don’t let the light in” will be a favorite among his fans.  “I wrote it within the last few months before I became sober.  At that time, I was reflecting on the way I had been living my life over the last few years that my song ‘All-American Boy’ blew up, in 2013,” he said.  “I felt isolated and realized I was dealing with that isolation in some unhealthy ways.”

With the release of his first album, All American Boy, in 2015, Steve Grand broke the mold for the traditional singer-songwriter.  Having self-funded a viral video of the title track, then fan funding the release and creating a vocal and energetic fanbase, the openly gay artist from Chicago created a place for himself in the music industry and hasn’t looked back since.  The past 3 years have seen Grand touring across the world, gathering new energetic fans, and creating new music.

With over 18 million views on YouTube, a #3 and #10 album on The Billboard Independent Album charts, and one of the most successful music Kickstarter campaigns ever under his belt, Grand has not just broken the rules, but he has changed the game in how to be a successful singer-songwriter in this era. His album, not the end of me, is available on Steve Grand’s website, at all live shows, and across all digital download and streaming platforms.

Empress Of

empress of chicago pride fest

Lorely Rodriguez, the singular mind behind Empress Of, is a songwriter and producer living Brooklyn, NY. In the early part of 2012, she began a personal songwriting exercise, writing, and recording a daily series of one-minute ideas. Completing each of these snippets in several hours apiece, she eventually amassed a catalog of about fifty. Selections from this series were eventually uploaded to YouTube anonymously, each paired with a blank color swatch. The fruits of this project, deemed a series of “colorminutes”, were released on cassette via the Japanese record label, Big Love, and effectively served as the launch of Empress Of.

In the latter half of 2013, following domestic and international touring stints, her most ambitious recording to date, Realize You was self-released online to critical acclaim. Illustrating great progress in production and an even more broad swath of songwriting chops, incorporating witty lyricism and soaring melodies, this is just a hint of what remains in store for the future.

Mýa

Mya

Grammy Award-Winning Recording Artist, Mýa, celebrates 23 years as an internationally known, singer, songwriter, producer, dancer/choreographer, actor, activist, and philanthropist. A young 18-year-old when she released her self-titled, double-platinum debut, Mýa was no stranger to the stage with piano lessons at 5, violin and orchestra, and gospel choir throughout her grade school years, studying many styles of dance and acting in several plays, which were all in preparation for her big break in the entertainment business.

In 2021, Mýa is still going strong, running her own independent record label Planet 9 for 13 years, as she completes her 14th & 15th music projects, two films, and an audiobook catered to those looking to transition to a healthy, vegan lifestyle. All of her new music projects are available on all digital and streaming outlets worldwide and viewable at www.myamya.com. On February 26, the independent action film “Lazarus” debuted on Fox’s new streaming platform Tubi, in which Mýa plays a psychic, also appearing on its soundtrack. On March 27, Mýa celebrates the 20th Anniversary of her international collaboration hit “Lady Marmalade” with her peers Christina Aguilera, Pink, Lil’ Kim, and Missy. In June, Mya partnered with Verizon and Visa for the virtual “Songs & Stories” live performance series with Looped Live. Mýa also made appearances on Disney’s Atlantis: Lost Empire Animation’s 20th Anniversary Celebration Live Stream as a guest speaker, Mercy For Animals’ Hope Gala as a presenter, and DJ Cassidy’s “Pass the Mic” as performer serving summer nostalgia with Beenie Man and their international hit “Girls Dem Suga” BET Awards weekend. On July 2nd, Mya returns with a fresh, new sound as MÝA LAN$KY documenting the struggle and reward of being an independent thinker and doer on her first rap single “Worth It” spitting conscious, meaningful bars as the boss of her own life, body, mind, spirit, decisions and independent record label. With 2 completed albums on the way, Mýa shares her excitement about her new upcoming music…

She says, “‘Worth It’ is in essence about the reward at the end of the tunnel after a long journey of centering self and finding your own voice in a world of noise and chaos, holding onto faith for the fight to continue, alongside the relentless grind, mental, physical and spiritual conditioning and sacrifice necessary to not only survive on the road less traveled to ownership, but to thrive with victory and glory on the other side. Though it hasn’t been easy, it has truly been an educational and rewarding journey these past 23 years in entertainment. I am truly grateful for every experience, encounter, and individual who has been a part of this ride. My passion & love for music has never been greater and the best of me has yet to come with the intention to inspire.”
